WAY OVER YONDER
solo exhibition
March 21st - April 12th, 2026
Opening Reception: First Friday, April 3rd, 2026
Arch Enemy Arts presents WAY OVER YONDER by Ireland-based artist Brad Gray, a series of eight new works in oil depicting enigmatic worlds filled with phantom spirits and tender monsters—emerging from the primordial soup of dark dreams. With theatricality inspired by the Old Masters through structural cues taken from the likes of Rubens, Dore, Turner, Bosch, and Carravaggio, Gray uses a technique of thin, painterly oil glazes to render endless detail while keeping the sumptuous textures from his underpaintings intact. The result is an atmospheric haze that feels deep and psychological, at once grotesque and humanitarian, drawn from the dissonance Gray’s experienced in his own life.
“The recurring imagery of something ‘held’ or ‘holding’ began from looking back on my days as a Royal Marine on a survival course for seven days on Dartmoor in the middle of winter. It was bleak, and on the second day, I was given a large white rabbit to look after. We wore blue boiler suits, and I held this rabbit down the front of my suit where it wrapped itself around my waist for warmth in a kind of mutually beneficial comfort. I carried this rabbit everywhere—map-reading through the night in horizontal rain and numbing cold. On the last day, I was told to break my companion’s neck, cook it up, and share it amongst my hungry group. The paintings I’ve done often have a monster holding something soft and cute. I was the monster. I love animals and I found that very difficult.” - Brad Gray
Brad Gray was born in Germany to English parents in 1971 and is based in Kilcullen, Ireland where he’s lived with his wife and children for nine years. After his short stint in the Marines, he enrolled in Illustration at Bristol Technical College and went on to graduate from the Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall in 1994. Gray exhibits widely across the country and around the world; WAY OVER YONDER marks his fourth solo show and his first in the States. Arch Enemy Arts began showing Gray’s work in 2024, and we are absolutely mesmerized by his style of symbolic dark surrealism.
