Brad Gray

IRELAND

Brad Gray (b. 1971) is a surreal painter, who depicts enigmatic worlds filled with tender monsters emerging from the primordial soup of dark dreams. Richly symbolic and theatrical,  Gray uses a technique of thin, painterly glazing in oil to render endless detail while keeping the sumptuous textures from his underpaintings intact. The result is an atmospheric haze that feels deep and psychological, at once grotesque and humanitarian, inspired by Old Master painters like Rubens, Bosch, and Carravaggio, and drawn from his often dissonant experience of contemporary life.

Born in Germany to English parents, Gray is based in Kilcullen, Ireland where he lives with his wife and children. After a short stint in the Marines, he enrolled in Illustration at Bristol Technical College and went on to graduate from the Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall in 1994, and participated in several prestigious residencies all over the world. Gray’s work is widely exhibited in group shows across the country and internationally, and in 2026, AEA proudly hosted his debut solo feature in the States.
