SLUMBER
solo exhibition
October 3rd - November 2nd, 2025
Opening Reception: First Friday, October 3rd• 5-9pm
Arch Enemy Arts presents SLUMBER by Alex Garant. Thirteen new works in a range of sizes by the “Queen of Double Eyes,” who has seriously leveled up her op-art, pop-realism, double-eye glitch since her last solo with us in 2023. Each subject is superimposed twice with two sets of eyes, but for SLUMBER, the dual images are softer, more blurred and spaced further apart than ever before, creating an impressive analog perspective ‘error’ that falls somewhere between analytical cubism and a double exposure photograph. Ironically, this push for more movement, more speed and a greater shift in perspective—has the effect of slowing us down.
“SLUMBER is about stillness,” Garant tells us. “I stripped the work to what I care about most: the face, the rhythm, the doubled gaze. The colors are softer, the gestures slower. Nothing’s trying to perform; it’s allowed to just be. That’s where the little sparks show up hopefully, the after-image, the pause, the quiet flicker. If the work helps you to slow your heartbeat for a minute, then it’s doing its job.”
Garant does what great artists do; that is, she gets us to pause, to look, to focus or at least try to. Playful pinks, serene sky blues, and subtle retro accessories adorn and surround emotionally muted yet beautiful faces, sending us into a cloudlike dreamstate of deadpan whimsy. Painted with the artist’s signature style, their expressions are at once delightful and deeply alienating, drawing us in by challenging our urge to look away.
Alex Garant (b.1982) is a Canadian artist, who studied at Notre-Dame-De-Foy College near Quebec City. Now recognized as the inventor of “Analogue Glitch Art” and a pioneer of the Contemporary Figurative Op Art movement, Garant says “it was a heart attack in 2012 that catalyzed her full dedication to art, forever altering her perspective on the world.” We are proud to have been one of the first galleries to show Garant’s work back in 2015, and it is an honor to present her fifth solo feature with the gallery.
