MANUEL ZAMUDIO

NEON MEMORY

solo exhibition

November 6th - 29th, 2026

Opening Reception: First Friday, November 6th

Arch Enemy Arts presents NEON MEMORY, nine new oil paintings by Manuel Zamudio that depict portraits of memories warped by time. Hyperreal figures, etched with intensity and emotional depth, stand before graffiti-tagged and layered landscapes zooming in and out of focus. While painting this series, Zamudio’s signature palette of vibrant, glowing, fluorescent light became, for him, a representation of memory itself. He tells us, “Neon can feel vivid and beautiful but also distant, distorted, or incomplete.”

“Over the last year, I’ve found myself reflecting more on my own life, my family, becoming a father, and the things we carry with us from the past. I became interested in the idea that memory isn’t always something clear or accurate. It can be fragmented, romanticized, distorted, or even completely reinterpreted depending on where you are in your life. The figures in these paintings exist somewhere between the present and these almost dreamlike environments, with the murals, tattoos, landscapes, and neon acting as pieces of memory or symbols of experiences that they carry with them.” - Manuel Zamudio

The results are portraits of resilience, rebellion, and the individual act of remembering. Naturally, time plays a major role in the work, as Zamudio explores a different kind of beauty, one that favors uniqueness and age as evidence of life lived. Even the backgrounds, more loosely painted than the figures in the foreground, wear graffiti like weathered tattoos, pushing the figures forward, creating visual depth, and drawing us to specific elements that build Zamudio’s open narratives.

“I want the paintings to be visually striking without needing to dive any deeper, but if viewers choose to spend more time with them, there are multiple meanings and layers to discover. Ultimately, I want to allow the work to continue revealing something beyond that first encounter.” Manuel Zamudio (b. 1988) is a self taught artist based in McCallen, Texas. He began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2020 after submitting to our Spotlight Showcase, and NEON MEMORY is his third solo with the gallery.
