KRISTEN EGAN

LAND OF THE LOW SUN

November 23rd, 2024 - January 5th, 2025

Closing Reception: First Friday, January 3rd, 2025

In the hushed embrace of November, between autumn’s last breath and the icy herald of winter, a dance of shadows emerges. An ancient ritual begins. This is THE LAND OF THE LOW SUN, a solo exhibition by Kristen Egan, proudly presented by Arch Enemy Arts. Twenty-one masks and reliquaries–drunk on primordial magic–gather to guard the cycle that turns harvest into frost.

Kristen Egan sculpts mythical creatures out of naturally harvested gourds, paper clay, and wood. She blends organic forms with tight and technical assemblage, hand-carving intricate details and intoxicating expressions for work that looks natural and ancient. Egan painted THE LAND OF THE LOW SUN in earthy winter-whites, an added nod to the approaching season, then adorned each animal with gold leaf, branches, leather, bells, and bones. Egan collects her natural materials over time; their hidden histories add to the artist’s ever-expanding mythology.

“I was doing some world-building and wanted THE LAND OF THE LOW SUN to encompass a wintery, arctic, Yule-vibe, but I also kept it broad enough for some Samhain harvest themes. A November show felt like a place of transitions–autumn to winter, light to dark, life and death–where the veil is thin between worlds. This series speaks to the edges of things; cliffs dropping off into the sea, half moons, and sacred stones. It is a series dedicated to the dark half of the year.” - Kristen Egan

To accompany this collection of sculptures and masks, Egan created four precious paintings framed in reclaimed wood. Her first presentation of 2D work in over a decade, these paintings illustrate the world encompassed by THE LAND OF THE LOW SUN, they demonstrate Egan’s inspiring versatility as an artist, and further capture the whimsical spirit of her world.

Kristen Egan is based in Pennsylvania. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the SUNY College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her work is collected internationally, and she has sold out each of her solo exhibitions with Arch Enemy Arts. We are proud to have been the first gallery to feature Egan’s work back in 2012, and it is an honor to host THE LAND OF THE LOW SUN, her eighth major solo with the gallery.
