ANNETTE JANELLE
BIDDEN FRUITS
solo exhibition
October 2nd - November 1st, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, October 2nd, 2026
Arch Enemy Arts presents BIDDEN FRUITS by Annette Janelle. Sixteen of the artist’s signature porcelain cups, wall-pockets, curios, and vases blur the line between functional object, sculpture, and narrative illustration. With delicate scrollwork, romantic imagery, and soft pastels, Annette’s style is like Antoinette-era Rococo but stranger, with a more complex sense of humanity. At the heart of the show, Annette presents “The Gift,” a three-piece composition that re-examines the biblical creation of sin through the lens of contemporary feminism:
“I think a lot about how [the story of Adam and Eve] is used to reinforce patriarchal ideologies, dissuading women from seeking truth or self-reliance…[It makes me] think of Eve as more of a saintly figure rather than a sinner. Instead of committing the ‘original sin,’ Eve is…eating and sharing the Fruit of Knowledge as an act of blessing, bestowing The Gift of an internalised sense of moral judgement upon humanity.” - Annette Janelle
In the rest of the show, wild dancers, floating faces, and burning hearts of fruit circle “The Gift” like proof of Eve’s uninhibited freedom. To illustrate these scenes, Annette presents some of her most involved painted ceramics to-date, using concentrated pigment powders called mason stains and even oil paint directly on the porcelain. The move reinforces Annette’s reluctance for her work to fit neatly into any one category. She tells us, “I want my work to be something ineffable and complex, multifaceted and almost contradictory. I want it to feel like a stretch, and a hug, and an epiphany all at once.”
Annette Janelle (b. 1992) is based in Payson, Arizona and is largely self-taught in ceramics. She began exhibiting with Arch Enemy Arts in 2023, and we are honored to have her back for her second feature with the gallery.
