LAURA CATHERWOOD
TRUTH TELLERS
solo exhibition
October 24th - November 15th, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6th 2026
Arch Enemy Arts presents TRUTH TELLERS by Laura Catherwood, the artist’s debut feature with the gallery and a collection focused on learning from, and leaning on, nature to guide us through dark times. The show comes in two parts. Four mixed media black-and-white works in graphite and acrylic illustrate what Catherwood calls “Nightlights,” animals holding a guiding light and offering sanctuary to tiny figures, who rest their heads in the comfort of their protection. In the second part, Laura presents three oil paintings depicting three “Truthtellers,” singing animals, who within themselves hold the light of day, and in their songs, the promise of hope for tomorrow.
Catherwood tells us each of these paintings “includes a representation of one of the five senses. Below the katydids loom the mouths of pitcher plants, representing taste. Overlooking the frog is a pair of irises, representing sight. Around the robin flutter butterflies, with attentive wings like pairs of ears, listening.” Laura says, “The truth of nature is something we experience directly by tuning in with our senses as opposed to using words”
Laura Catherwood (b. 1990) is based in Rochester, NY. She moved there from Chicago last year, in part, to reconnect with nature. Laura studied academic realism drawing and painting at Atelier Eftimov in Chicago and tells us she developed what she learned there by taking inspiration from natural history illustrations, evolving her style into more expressive representations of feelings through nature. For TRUTH TELLERS, those feelings are a direct response to the tumult of the times:
“Each day there is something else in the news that is so gut-wrenchingly wrong, it can make you feel hopeless. That is why, for comfort, I turn to the truth of nature, and I want to remind others they can do the same. We can ground ourselves in what is real and immutable, and we can feel empowered to stand steady against the injustices in our human society.” - Laura Catherwood
TRUTH TELLERS will be on view from October 24th - November 15th, 2026
