Arch Enemy Arts presents THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR, the debut solo feature by Canadian artist Marek Osedowski. Each piece, titled for each of the eight sabbats, or seasonal festivals, celebrated in Celtic, Wiccan, and Neo-Pagan traditions, creates an elegant and enigmatic portrayal of the shifting rhythms that accompany each part of the year. Teeming with nuanced symbolism and hidden meaning, THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR combines Osedowski’s interest in occult mysticism, the changing seasons of his Alberta home, as well as the theatrical romanticism of fashion design by Alexander McQueen and others.

 

“This series is an invitation to return to nature and to lean into the concept of slowing down. For me, painting is a conduit for translating my internal dialogue into tangible reality. It allows me to process complex emotions and thoughts by grounding them in visual imagery. There is an immense, quiet satisfaction in bringing something entirely new and deeply personal into the world. It is an act of vulnerability, and I constantly try to remind myself to embrace the outcome. I hope this series evokes that same sense of grounding and reassurance, reminding people that just as nature moves through necessary cycles of dormancy and rebirth, our personal transitions have their own inherent purpose and timing.” - Marek Osedowski 

 

To create his work, Marek starts with methodical research and collage, assembling bits and pieces from fashion books, magazines, photographs, and images found online. He then sketches from those compositions, tailoring his source material into the final composition that gets translated to canvas and subtly adorned with glass-bead applique and embroidered tulle. The light and color-work, Marek tells us, are his own creation, informed by intense practice with gouache and watercolor. For this series, Marek turns to water-soluble oils, a lesser-known medium that affords him the translucent flow of water-based media with the workability and color-mixing of oils (minus the toxic solvents). The result feels timeless. With this show, Osedowski delivers an austere and refined sense of beauty to the spiritual forces that govern the changing seasons. 

 

Marek Osedowski (b. 1998) is from Alberta, Canada. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 2020 with a BFA in Art and Design. An emerging artist inspired by Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist movements, we are drawn to the myriad influences and mixed media adornments we find in Marek’s work. Thus, we are honored to host his first solo exhibition, THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR.
