KATIE GAMB

SHADOW BOTANY

solo exhibition

July 13th - August 4th, 2024

Closing Reception: First Friday, August 2nd from 5-9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents SHADOW BOTANY by Katie Gamb; ten oil paintings that depict the private lives of garden creatures. Rendered with kinder-cute technical prowess, Gamb’s subjects emerge from their picturesque country manor bathed in the green glow of a scattered sky; soft and delicate like fragments of a forgotten dream.

Loosely connected, the characters pictured in SHADOW BOTANY are from the artist’s collection of abandoned sketches, which she explains have long-awaited to be made:

“A lot of the show is made from disparate ideas that I’ve wanted to paint but didn’t fit with another show. I gathered all the ones that felt like they belonged together and worked on them for a bit before the theme became apparent…I’m a big fan of using chance and happenstance to make decisions. [For the title] I wrote words and phrases down on scraps of paper, pulled them out of a hat, and kept repeating until it felt right…SHADOW BOTANY resonated with the vibe of the collection and offered interesting potential for the pieces I had yet to create.”

Gamb’s process has a sense of honoring the randomness of life’s journey, producing paintings that feel private, personal, and tenderly reflective. Like scenes shot from storybook stills, her works are whimsical, romantic, and expansive; extending far beyond the frame to contemplate narratives of nature, change, and the passage of time.

Katie Gamb lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She studied Illustration at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and has exhibited her work around the world. Gamb began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2022, and SHADOW BOTANY is her first solo exhibition with the gallery.
