SANCTUARY

solo exhibition

March 23rd - April 14th, 2024

Opening Reception: First Friday, April 5th from 5-9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents SANCTUARY, ten exquisite new paintings by Tokyo-based artist Kazuhiro Hori, set in the artist’s signature sweet, candy-coated dreamworld. Here, Japanese schoolgirls are tempted and taunted, lured and provoked by the bedeviled ephemera of their own adolescence, masterfully rendered by the artist’s deft hand.

“SANCTUARY is an area of the heart that these women want to protect and do not want to be trespassed upon. It can be values, favorite things, relationships, and so on. However, that sanctuary has already been invaded by the environment, society, etc. Yet, they live under the delusion that a sanctuary exists.” - Kazuhiro Hori

Beautiful blue butterflies, sticky-sweet treats, evil stuffed animals, and sparkling fruit capture the attention of Kazuhiro’s protagonists. Seduced, they quickly succumb to a sea of peak-whipped meringue and find themselves face-to-face with the devilish pink captain of their own kawaii nightmare, forced to cope with hard truths that lurk beneath the surface.

Kazuhiro Hori is an internationally collected and renowned artist, who graduated from Kanazawa College of Art in Japan. His work has appeared in countless group shows with Arch Enemy Arts since 2017, and we are ecstatic to present SANCTUARY as his first solo exhibition with our gallery.
