Arch Enemy Arts presents SAME WINDOW DIFFERENT VISUAL, an exquisite new collection by dark surrealist Babs Webb, the artist’s second feature with the gallery. Five drawings and three light-up dimensional works, including a gorgeously constructed rare sculpture, form a gateway into the artist’s dark and ethereal inner world. Harrowing and complex, Babs’ symbolic images float like memories moving in and out of view.

“My work revolves around nostalgia and a longing for the past. In this series, I use windows and portals as a framing device, specifically portals to past memories or internal worlds. We always hold our past (our memories) in the present (our minds); the window is our eyes, the visual our reality. The visual changes, but the window will always be us.” - Babs Webb

SAME WINDOW DIFFERENT VISUAL is a raw and emotive series. It is sweeping and intense; at once private, personal, delicate and dramatic. For her small and intimate drawings, Babs works on a dark ground of powdered graphite. She uses brushes, erasers, and fine-tipped mechanical pencils to blend the powdered surface in small and gentle strokes, literally pulling her images from their atmospheric haze, building the graphite in layers on the surface. Then, after a long and carefully repetitive application of varnish, she brings out the whitest whites with acrylic paint, using a very fine, almost single-haired brush. The process creates an astonishing chiaroscuro effect, bringing in light, accentuating the darkness, and pushing the limits of what graphite can do.

The shadowboxes and sculptural figure underscore the importance of light and dimensionality in Babs’ work, as well as her deft hand with a range of mediums. Fitted with LEDs, these pieces add a subtle drama to the series, like the guiding light of an open window or whispering eyes calling from a dream.

Babs Webb (b. 1992) is based in Castle Rock, Colorado. She studied communications and illustration at Pratt Institute, developing a career that spans both fine art and commercial illustration. Babs has been exhibiting with Arch Enemy Arts since 2020. Her first solo feature, COMFORT CREATURE, debuted in 2024 and sold out in exhibition.
