We have a minor obsession with tiny things. The well-made miniature is just so captivating, so dreamlike and full of imagination. Like a window to another world, miniatures trigger some innate escapism within us; a longing for places we may never go and encounters we may never see. Artist Caroline Dewison (UK, b. 1977) takes that feeling to another level. 

 

In her new series PHENOMENON, Dewison presents nineteen ~ 5” x 7” dioramas of UFO clusters flying amidst hazy Earthen landscapes. Crafted in clay, various flocks, resin and wool—plus a bit of sparkle—her charming ¾ inch aircrafts hover over crop circles, saucer  nests, and ocean spirals. Five are automatas, kinetic sculptures that operate via star-shaped hand-crank integrated into the front of the piece, moving the UFOs around circular tracks and adding to the playful nature of her work. 

 

“I’ve always been fascinated by UFOs and otherworldly visitors. I’m really interested in the symbols and the magic of the unexplained. To me, spirals and crop circles represent a journey or path to be travelled. I’ve travelled around a lot of the UK to the most wonderful places, full of magical landscapes and beautiful skies. I’d like for the viewer to consider that there might be something else out there, to portray my love of those places in peaceful moments away from the busyness of life. There is real magic in the world if you look for it.” - Caroline Dewison

 

Caroline Dewison is based in Warrington, England. Entirely self-taught, she switched to this style of mixed media sculpture just two years ago after working primarily with ceramic beads and clay. Her online shop, A House of Wonders, sells DIY miniature kits to build tiny replica homes, dollhouse rooms and furniture, a practice that feels analogous to the way Dewison talks about her work. She wants the world to experience the wonder she sees all around us, and what better way than through crafting a world of our own?
