Arch Enemy Arts presents LIMITLESS SEA by Juliet Schreckinger, eight new mounted drawings and twelve miniature framed ‘captains’ depict fanciful maritime scenes that kindle an earnest spirit of hope and resilience. Returning to her most beloved characters like Oscar the Octopus and Quinn the Sperm Whale and adding new friends in Harlow the Hare, Juliet pictures them soaring through clouds and lighting dim skies in some of her strongest work to date—and she completed it all while recovering from major reconstructive jaw surgery.

 

“LIMITLESS SEA is a show made up of characters navigating through the foggy darkness by focusing on the light…and on the other side is limitless possibility. I went in this direction because, to be transparent, I have dealt with a lot of darkness as of late (fun fact, I made this series with only one good working eye), and the show served as a reminder to myself of what matters most in life. Finding the beauty, finding the light, and spending time with those who make your soul happy.” - Juliet Schreckinger

 

Juliet talks about her characters like dear friends, and she revisits them as such in one of her darkest times with joyful imagination. Combining storybook sensibility with precise ink stippling, linework, and atmospheric washes of graphite, Juliet captures the full range of her medium, creating gorgeous contrast and exceptional rendering in illustrations that are lighthearted yet polished. A lot of Schreckinger’s life got put on hold this summer, but her work absolutely did not, and we could not be more proud to represent this series with her. 

 

“I know what it is like to be caught in the darkness, unaware of how best to move forward. And after my largest surgery to date, I can confidently say that it seems to me that there is always light even in the darkest of moments. I have seen that light in my loved ones, in my friends, in strangers being kind. I have seen light in the memories of my happiest moments laughing with the people I love, even if I wasn’t able to laugh at the moment.”

 

Juliet Schreckinger (b. 1999) is based in Amityville, New York and graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC. LIMITLESS SEA is the artist’s fifth solo show with Arch Enemy Arts after joining the gallery in 2021 as one of the youngest artists to ever appear in our Spotlight Showcase exhibition.
