GRIEF & FLOURISH

solo exhibition

August 22nd - September 13th, 2026

Opening Reception: First Friday, September 4th from 5pm - 9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents GRIEF AND FLOURISH, a series of eight new works in acrylic, ink, and gouache by Northern California-based artist Mary Esther Muñoz. Mary’s work is intimate, romantic, and haunting. Open female forms and spectral remains entangle with fungus and wildflowers to suggest the seductive beauty of decay and the enduring love signaled by grief.

“This series focuses on holding tightly to tiny things that give hope in dark times. Heavily inspired by how dandelions will grow anywhere and how mushrooms are both composers and decomposers, these pieces navigate the human body’s ultimate submission to nature, where flourishing and decay happen simultaneously. I also love to arrange mushrooms and flowers around the torso in a shrine-like manner to honor bodily autonomy and self-love.” - Mary Esther Muñoz

Mary Esther Muñoz (b. 1980) lives near Sacramento, CA. She studied Art History at UC Santa Barbara and is largely self-taught in her practice, working for the past ten years as a full-time artist and illustrator. Mary began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2023, and GRIEF AND FLOURISH is her second solo feature with the gallery.
