DREW CAINES
ENGLISH DREAMTIME
special release
May 23rd - June 14th, 2026
Opening Reception: First Friday, June 5th from 5-9pm
Arch Enemy Arts presents ENGLISH DREAMTIME, a collection of miniature folk masks and wall charms by England-based ceramicist Drew Caines. Working in stoneware in his signature style of archaic-pop, Caines imagines a playful little pantheon of British folk spirits—medieval grotesques and mumming traditions, church gargoyles and pagan goddesses—for a series that feels ancient, full of mischief, and out of step with time. A mash-up of symbols and references, Caines’ work is like secular idolatry. It satisfies our thirst for handmade folk horror in a way that’s contemporary, creepy-cute, newly excavated, and totally alive.
“ENGLISH DREAMTIME is an ongoing concept, the idea that these objects come from some undefined, mythic culture existing outside of linear time but rooted in English folklore. On one hand, they look like they could have been dug up from an archeological dig site. On the other, the references are contemporary, making their position in time a bit ambiguous. Either way, they have come from an alternate reality or parallel universe and have somehow mysteriously ended up in Philadelphia.”
Drew Caines (b. 1966) is based in Leeds, England. Primarily self-taught as an artist, Caines holds a Masters degree from the London School of Economics and worked for many years as an illustrator and graphic designer before committing to his artist career full-time. Caines has exhibited widely across the UK, and his work is featured in private collections around the world. Drew Caines began showing with Arch Enemy Arts last year, and ENGLISH DREAMTIME is his first solo collection with the gallery.
