BEARINGS

solo exhibition

January 18th - February 16th, 2025

Opening Reception: First Friday, February 7th, 2025 â€‹

Arch Enemy Arts presents BEARINGS by Kelly Vivanco. A series of twelve paintings feature charming characters and their offbeat adventures, set in the dreams of their own backyard. Badgers, toads, bunnies and bears are playfully wrought in welcoming interiors and retro-fitted landscapes, riding in train cars and driving on mopeds. They plan their days snugly huddled in libraries and imagine journeys of moon-landings under the sea.

“[For this series] there was this urge to protect and keep things I care about safe, figuring out the world, and not going at it alone. [Motifs include] exploring, learning and creating with those close to you…Foods, books, nature, and cozy environments often come up in my work [because] they satisfy some form of nourishment, be it physical, mental or emotional.”

With wanderlust aimed at a simpler time, Vivanco’s work reminds us of a Wes Anderson film if it met the characters from “The Wind in the Willows.” Awash with calm, uncomplicated energy, the artist’s storybook sensibility feels frank and friendly. Four of the pieces feature hand-carved, rustic frames that accentuate the compositional quirks and limited palettes of Vivanco’s sweet and playful world.

Kelly Vivanco is based in San Diego, California. She graduated from Laguna College of Art and Design and has exhibited extensively around the world. Vivanco began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2016, and her work has been featured in more than fifteen group shows to date. BEARINGS is her second solo feature with the gallery.
