Makoto Chi

WESTERN MASS.

Makoto Chi creates mixed media illustrations of bodies, fluid and anthropomorphic, entangled in ambiguous states of conflict and intimacy. Informed by the cultures and mythologies of his mixed Japanese and Ashkenazi Jewish heritages, as well as his queer, gendered experiences, Makoto’s graphic yet painterly work exists in a space between freedom and brutality.

Makoto Chi graduated from Emily Carr University with a BFA in Illustration in 2015. He has been tattooing since 2004/05, and currently lives at Lupinewood Collective, a majority trans, all-queer intentional collective living project in Western Massachusetts. Makoto began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2020, his work has been exhibited in Mand the gallery hosted “5 Poisons,” a collaborative co-feature between the artist and Lauren YS in 2024.
