REBECCA REEVES

the gardens wept the day you died

solo exhibition

Opening on October 7th, 2022

Arch Enemy Arts is thrilled to present another stunning feature of mixed media artist Rebecca Reeves, entitled: THE GARDENS WEPT THE DAY YOU DIED. A decadent array of 16 beaded works, Reeves holds the hand of those who know what it is to grieve, and offers sympathetic, shimmering arrangements to provoke a sense of peace and contemplation.

Working out of her home studio in Bucks County, PA, a region where the artist has lived since birth, Reeves blesses us with her very own Wunderkammer of affection. A continuation of her investigation of Victorian bead art, Rebecca’s practice was first inspired by her great grandmother– an avid, floral beadworker. Developed over years through study of antique pieces of mourning art, Reeves sees her work as a preservation of that niche artform.

Dramatic and alluring, meticulously crafted blooms and old ceramic birds drip sparkling tears of blood, cascading reverently from the custom made frames that hold them. An echo of the veils that the bereaved once wore, the trickle of dazzling strands bears a delicate reflection of life after death.

On the series, Rebecca writes:

“This body of work is dedicated to my grandparents. Both maternal and paternal grandparents were avid gardeners. Since I was little, they shared their favorite plants and educated me on gardening.  Most of the plants in my gardens are either from their collections or a tribute flower representing them. When my maternal grandparents became ill, I spent my time caring for them. The gardens were in a very sad state due to the lack of care. It was almost as if they were withering away just like my loved ones.”

THE GARDENS WEPT THE DAY YOU DIED is Arch Enemy Arts’ second solo feature of Rebecca Reeves, coming after last year’s Lost/Loss, and a dual feature with Michelle Avery Konczyk in 2020.
