DATE NIGHT

feature

February 5th, 2021

Arch Enemy Arts is excited to present Date Night, a five-piece solo feature by Toronto-based artist Richard Ahnert. Ahnert is known for his anthropomorphic subjects, most often assigning animal heads to human forms in order to explore various facets of the human condition in contemporary life.

Ahnert writes, [For this series] I thought it would be fun to explore some of the complexities of socializing in 2020…Whether its first dates off Tinder or a married couple dressing up to meet at the dinner table, [my paintings ask] Is the evening about to begin or has it ended? Are they alone again and relieved? Or are they disappointed? Are they getting ready for an evening of solitude? A date night for one?”

For some reason, Ahnert’s animal-head, human-body paintings capture these questions in ways human heads never could—and this is fascinating. Perhaps by not seeing ourselves (or anything that looks like ourselves), we are able to truly see ourselves. We see the absurd yet necessary rituals of our lives. We are reminded (through animals) of what makes us human, and we remember all the things we never knew we’d miss.

This is Richard Ahnert's first feature collection with AEA. It will be on view from February 5th - February 26th, 2021.
Sold works will begin to ship the week of March 8th, 2021.

Private viewing appointments are available Monday - Friday by emailing info@archenemyarts.com to schedule.
