REBECCA REEVES

LOST/LOSS

solo exhibition

Opening December 3rd, 2021

Arch Enemy Arts is pleased to announce our December solo feature: Lost/Loss, a collection of works by the enchanting Rebecca Reeves. Debuting ten meticulously crafted pieces of beadwork– some employing graphite, felt, porcelain dolls, and post-mortem photography– Reeves empathetically assembles her poignant creations within pearlescent, gilded gesso, and hardwood frames.

A regional native, Rebecca resides in Bucks County, PA where she creates at her home studio. Taking inspiration from her loved ones to craft delicate tributes to their memory, she gains insight through pulling apart antique pieces to find the secrets of their construction. In this, her technique is moulded from constant learning and observation, a process which she claims is an ongoing lesson in patience.

Noting a transformation in her ability to articulate emotion through creating, she writes:

“My greatest hope is that my work can provide a moment of comfort for those who are also mourning the loss of a loved one. Even if for a brief moment, the viewer can lose themselves in the details of the work, to feel comfort in the materials and to connect with the work on a personal basis.”

The subjects of loss and grief have long been the heart of Reeves' works, and the pieces showcased within this feature weep from its tell-tale core. The colors she uses harken back to her personal memories, each piece capturing a moment in time. Nautical imagery, itself a tribute to the artist’s father, beckons the viewer to “sail into the beyond.” Conjuring the essence of beaded veils, jet brooches, and the brilliant ornamentation of Victorian hair art, Loss/Lost sings from the pallid murk of December’s icy wind to the warmly lit walls of Arch Enemy Arts.

This solo feature will be Rebecca’s first at AEA following her collaborative debut, From Within Ourselves We See, with Michelle Avery Konczyk shown last year.

Lost/Loss opens Friday, December 3rd and will be on view through January 8th, 2022.
