CHRIS HAAS

PRETEND THERAPY

feature

October 6th - 29th, 2023

Arch Enemy Arts presents PRETEND THERAPY, seventeen new works by mixed media sculptor Chris Haas. Haas creates outlandish objects; his baroque peepers and elegant trophies are fit for some preternatural palace or haunted playhouse. Inviting viewers to imagine a world alive with fantasy, Haas explains, is precisely the inspiration behind his work:

“My youngest daughter spends a lot of time in my studio, and she often announces that I’m included in whatever scenario happens to be going on in the imaginary world she’s existing in at that moment. I always do my best to play along, but as we become adults, we forget how to play “pretend” and let our imaginations run free. I believe that, even though it takes me countless hours to produce these pieces, it really is just my version of playing pretend.”

Haas’ dedication to seamless assemblage brings to life whatever quirky fantasies viewers may conjure. Imbuing found objects with color, detail, and texture, Haas creates work that is deliciously convincing and playfully surreal. Based in Colorado, Haas is  self-taught and internationally collected. He has shown with Arch Enemy Arts since 2014, and PRETEND THERAPY is Haas’ second solo feature with the gallery.
