KRISTEN EGAN

New Old Gods
solo

October 16th, 2020

Arch Enemy Arts is excited to present New Old Gods, the fourth exclusive series and 2020 solo exhibition from mixed-media artist Kristen Egan.

Continuing with her traditional thematic inspiration taken from mythology and folklore, Kristen’s newest collection of sculptures focuses solely on the ceremonial instrument of the mask. As an ancient art form used by countless cultures around the world in different ritualistic and traditional practices, one of the more common applications and use of masks were to be created and worn as a way to symbolically connect, celebrate, and communicate with the ancestors and spirit world.  Similarly, Kristen’s New Old Gods solo exhibition is made entirely of wearable masks and seems to serve as her own vehicle of connection back to nature and the earth, with each new piece honoring and immortalizing the faces of many familiar woodland creatures as these seemingly magical and ancestral animal gods.

As an environmentally conscious artist that is deeply concerned with the preservation of our planet but also plagued by the idea that she’s powerless to effect change in any significant way, Kristen uses a quote from renowned American literature professor Joseph Campbell to articulate how important an artist's role is today in this modern landscape, as well as the value of connection to our surroundings.

“I think [environmental] awareness has and continues, to spread, and one thing we have the power to do as artists is to help inspire and encourage the growth of that connection with nature. As Joseph Campbell put it, "The function of the artist is the mythologization of the environment and the world." I'd like to contribute to that new mythology. Let’s revisit the old gods and reintegrate ourselves into the natural world, but bring with us our evolved understanding of the universe, our deeper understanding of science and acceptance of each other.”

By collecting materials sourced locally from surrounding forests, beaches, and neighboring Amish farms, Kristen’s New Old Gods solo was created following the same process she's developed and employed for almost 14 years, using carefully selected carved gourd shapes as the bases and then adding paper clay, carved wood, laurel branches, antlers, acrylics, and metal leaf adornments. Unique to this particular series are the brass bell embellishments that were added as a way to imply more movement and life in the masks since Kristen wanted them to appear as traditional ceremonial masks were originally intended to be viewed: in motion, and moving in the firelight.

New Old Gods will be on view from October 16th - November 13th, 2020.
Sold works will begin to ship the week of November 16th.

Private viewing appointments are available by emailing info@archenemyarts.com to schedule.
