MICHAEL CAMARRA

GODS OF A BROKEN LAND

feature

June 3rd, 2022

Arch Enemy Arts is pleased to present Gods Of A Broken Land, an exhibition of 11 brand new acrylic paintings by NYC artist, Michael Camarra.

The works, each skillfully executed on wood panel, are ethereal and enchanting. Bending light and chroma in concert with his signature juxtaposition, Camarra’s post-apocalyptic visions balance ancient relics with the technology of today. The twilight glow of his scenes present as otherworldly, however the elements he depicts harken to our own existence, with cell phones and other refuse carrying the same symbolic presence as the artifacts he portrays.

Describing the themes and motivation behind his work he writes:

“My work has an element of myth to it. I wanted this to really establish that myth. It's all born out of the junk and ephemera of modern living. However all those elements have been given different meaning in this world, they've been given an almost religious significance.

…I am constantly fascinated by how much we find from our past that we just don't know the explanation to. We find archaeological artifacts and we can only guess at their use. So I suppose I imagine the inhabitants of my world as doing a lot of that with the various junk that hasn't biodegraded in the distant future and how they'll reinterpret that and incorporate that into their own culture. This really comes to life in my propping and costume design.”

Concepts aside, there is no disputing Camarra’s mastery of color. The sharpness of his renderings are made extraordinary through his delicate use of contrast, modulating temperature and saturation to convey an exquisite depth. His preternatural palette glows like neon, yet the smoothness of his value range keeps the works grounded and convincing.
