BRIAN MASHBURN

2022 SPECIAL COLLECTION

feature

Friday • July 1st, 2022

Join us in welcoming Brian Mashburn to debut his Special Collection: an exhibition of 8 never-before-seen works in his fifth solo feature with Arch Enemy Arts. Awakening the wood and canvas mounts to which he meticulously paints with oil, the series carries every hallmark of Brian’s distinctive style.

Based in Asheville, NC, Brian studied at the University of North Carolina where he received his BFA in painting and drawing. Leading an impressive career in painting, Brian has been rendering his definitive landscapes for 15 of the last 25 years he has worked.

Mashburn’s peculiar and visionary paintings are packed with visual depth and mystery. Endless mist slithers between jagged mountains and trees, while remnants of a long-dead world jut out from brambles, all giving a stage for his delicately executed fauna to roam and dream upon. His use of muted palettes echo the dawn from which his worlds rise– serene, still, and yet intriguing to examine. There is a gentle turbulence to the mood he sets, in some moments haunting, in others entrancing.

Explaining the motivation behind this series he writes:

“My work is generally informed by whatever I’m interested in at the time - a lot of different inputs can determine the conceptual root of a piece.  These days I find myself in contact with more existential matters and therefore somewhat less prone to direct consideration; saying goodbye to a couple much loved pets, my wife and I expecting our first child later this year.  Whatever way these events show up in my current work will be subliminal as far as I’m concerned, although I’m sure this too will change with time.”
