Here Together, So Alone • October 1st - November 1st, 2015
Maria’s new body of work, her first solo show since 2013’s With Words, But Wind... (Arch Enemy Arts), explores how we group ourselves together as humans while staying inexplicably alone. The plastic veiled series is based on the idea of personality masks. That people are always covering pieces of themselves to be well mannered, accepted, more liked, etc. Sometimes our masks are transparent and sometimes they are more opaque. This process can be quite suffocating in certain situations. The centerpiece of this set is the large double figure veiled piece titled, “What We See”, inspired by one of my Maria’s favorite paintings by Rene Magritte (‘The Lovers’).
The accompanying non-veiled portraits attempt to make each piece feel more like a memory or have a familiar emotion associated with it. Pieces of jewelry or parts of clothing begin to expand past the portrait to create a psychological space around the subject.
