KIT MIZERES

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE HIGHER GROUND?

release date: Friday, July 24th 2020

For her third solo feature with Arch Enemy Arts, Kit Mizeres presents “What If I Don’t Want To Take the Higher Ground?,” a series of six paintings and two mixed media drawings that reflect the artist’s meditations on exploitation—both the masochistic tendency to sacrifice oneself to please another as well as the parasitic impulse to take advantage of those around you. Imbued with cultural references that nod to Mizeres’ nomadic lifestyle and crafted with symbols that connote all-too-familiar pathologies, the artist’s super clean, yet wildly maximalist aesthetic is channelled into a small scale that grips the eye as well as the mind.

Currently living out of a backpack, Mizeres says the intimate scale in this series was born out of necessity, but we find the size to be a new and exciting way to interact with her work. Rather than all-encompassing worlds into which we are forced to fall, each piece is a microcosm into which we willingly lean, and in a way, this experience reflects the power dynamics her work is about.

Mizeres explains, "The premise for this new group of works is meant to focus on…this surprisingly normalized behavior in our society: the exploitation of others and ones own self in order to claw at and obtain this supposed deeper level of human interaction…Underlying trauma being a driving force in exploitation for companionship and intimacy is a common theme…as well as co-dependence, which can at times lead to, if not, shallow and unfulfilling, then perhaps, toxic results.”

These deeply personal observations are by no means spelt-out to viewers; Mizeres imbeds them in complex and layered symbols, personal mythologies, and dream-imagery. She works in such a way that simultaneously peaks interest and inhibits decoding so that interpretations will abound.
