GERLANDA DI FRANCIA

SILVA MIRABILIS

feature

Friday • August 5th, 2022

Arch Enemy Arts is pleased to present SILVA MIRABILIS, a stunning new collection of works by Italian artist, Gerlanda di Francia.

The show consists of six acrylic paintings inspired by the mystical and historic land from which the artist is based. Done in the splendid technique of fresco, Gerlanda builds her captivating scenes with layers of color and hatching. The subject matter, born of both ancient legends and the artist’s own childhood musings, is enchanting and ethereal. Occupying this magical forest are fairy rings, witches, fungi, and fauna– each adding their own visual nod to the narrative Gerlanda has woven throughout the series.

Gerlanda’s aim is to inspire awe and wonder through the style of horror vacui, while also giving focus to the current plight of the planet. By presenting something wondrous and fantastical, the artist hopes to bring the viewer “a return to the fantasy of childhood.”

Expounding on this, di Francia writes:

“In this body of work I mainly wanted to look for the freshness, the inner place, made of fantastic animals, anthropomorphic plants, in an imaginary forest. This is because sometimes there is a need to go back and look at reality veiled by fantasy, sometimes this makes me feel good, and I would like to give something magical and positive to those who look at these new works.”
