Arch Enemy Arts is excited to present “Brief Moments of Chaos,” a new feature by Toronto-based oil painter, Alex Garant. Combining Figurative Op Art with analog Glitch art, Garant uses “patterns, duplication of elements, symmetry, and image superposition” to a dizzying effect. As brightly colored distortions vibrate the image, our brain works hopelessly, trying to focus the representation within.
Garant’s work is always exceptional, beautifully crafted, and technically commanding, but this series is especially exciting as the artist seems to have entered a moment of experimentation. In “Brief Moments of Chaos” Garant’s bright, vivid colors are a bit more subdued. Her figures feel a tad more somber. And the artist has moved from works on traditional canvas to painting on birch panels and paper.
Interestingly, these subtle changes reflect the state of mind Garant used as inspiration for the series as a whole. She writes, “As the world is changing and going through more challenges than ever, I experienced so many instants of confusion or short moments of overwhelmedness…This series was meant to embrace the process of creation, rather than focusing on over-fabricating creative restrictions.”
BRIEF MOMENTS OF CHAOS will be physically on view from September 4th - 25th, 2021.
