Arch Enemy Arts proudly presents “Beyond The Fall,” a feature of eight new oil paintings by UK based artist, Emma Black, who writes:

 

“‘Beyond The Fall’ is a series about transformation. Through the passage of time, memories can alter us, they can fly away to leave us forever, be corrupted, or bloom into something new. Whether for good or bad, the figures are in a constant state of change as they embrace both their strength and fragility…The visible anatomy acts as a nod towards—and simultaneous contortion of—the idea that true beauty is on the inside, contrasting with the unassuming attractiveness of the flora and fauna sprouting from the surface. The essential unreality of [the figures]…becomes intertwined with their identities…leading to the inevitability of a new personal understanding.”

We are struck by the effortless precision with which Black achieves this shifting reality. Her mastery of shadow and light creates incredible depth while existing entirely in the foreground. Her application of paint is wonderfully expressive yet tightly rendered, evoking the same “unreality” of her representations. With Black’s work, we are perfectly reminded of the transformation between paint and image, appearance and deception, and all the passages in between.
