EARTHLY REMAINS

feature

January 21st, 2022

Arch Enemy Arts is pleased to present Earthly Remains, an exciting collection of new works from Maryann Held. This solo feature debuts nine acrylic paintings that unite vibrance, texture, intricacy, and form– each lavishly housed within vintage frames.

A local artist, Maryann reinterprets Pennsylvania Dutch and illuminated motifs into brightly colored flora, suspending them alongside animal, insect, and bone alike. The black ground of her paintings catapult her subjects to the forefront, commanding the eye to consider every brilliant line of her embellished pieces. Like a soothing breath, organic elements give reprieve and contemplation as flowery leaves orbit around them.

Regarding the meanings behind her work, she states:

“My main artistic inspirations have always been naturalist illustrations, and more recently folk art. More abstractly I've not been able to stray too far from focusing on representations of death/ decay, and ideas of duality/ other selves. The state of the world is, frankly, panic-inducing, but focusing on death (and even suffering) as being a part of the natural world, and also a source of healing, is very helpful to me these days.”
