BUDDY NESTOR

MEDITATING FOR MONEY

feature exhibition

Opening August 20th, 2021

Arch Enemy Arts is excited to present "Meditating For Money," a new solo exhibition by New Jersey-based artist, Buddy Nestor.

Known for his grotesque and somewhat abstract portraiture, referred to as “spiritual x-rays," Buddy dissects the layers of his subjects' psyches. As viewers, we can’t help but let this darkness creep into our own minds, and as Nestor explains, that's the point. The artist writes, “I’m trying to get the viewer’s anxiety to synchronize with the image,” to create a lasting imprint on the deeper, darker layers of our subconscious.

This series, however, seems to be more of a personal exploration for Buddy as he seemingly allows his own rules to be broken. In the past, for example, his subjects consisted primarily of females stripped of earthly beauty. In this series, the majority of his skate decks appear to be more androgynous.

Nestor writes, “The application [of paint] is different. I didn’t use as many glazing swirls and overlaps as I did in the past. I want the application to be more simplified. Something that anyone could do if they had the materials. But I wanted to play more with design elements that, when used together, have a powerful result. A little less Joe Satriani, and a little more Melvins. I also removed some of my old rules about no smiles, no real eye patterns, and no blatantly psychedelic elements. This allowed me to play more. I used more pinks and messed around with radiating rings. The main goal was to truly have fun and paint more freely. I fell in love with the act of painting again in the last year.”
