hauntology

opening online: Friday, September 18th 2020

Arch Enemy Arts is pleased to announce Hauntology, the debut series of ten new mixed media drawings by Brian Serway. The show’s namesake stems from a philosophical concept that gives language to the atemporal nature of ghosts and memories. The study of things from the past that appear in our present, hauntology is about that which has no origin, because, for the see-er, it was “always-already” existing.

For Serway, that omnipresence is Appalachian folklore, the ghost stories he grew up with as a child, as well as the setting of his birth. Born in southwest Virginia, surrounded by its vast landscapes and fabled wildlife, Serway illustrates his ever-present apparitions, memories, and ghosts. He delicately layers and obscures his subjects, blanketing them in magic and ephemera. Viewing his work, we find ourselves simultaneously curious to know more about the histories from which he draws and, also, quietly terrified by their eerie and unearthly nature.

Serway beautifully speaks to one piece in the series, "Cut Joint Sinews":

“For this piece, and the series as a whole, I wanted to illustrate the idea of lost memory—the fragments we hold on to and their disjunction from the whole gives us a warped emotional aesthetic and perception. For me, this is most intriguing to create through the lens of the cosmos; as starstuff is what links us all together. This piece symbolizes a sort of physical manifestation of the creative process for me—going to a lost place in your mind, remembering fragments, and feeling an emotion that is just as real as anything in our daily lives.”

all pieces marked with a red dot have been sold.

Brian Serway's HAUNTOLOGY exhibition will be on the walls from September 18th - October 11th, 2020.
