Arch Enemy Arts is thrilled to announce Brian Mashburn's newest solo exhibition "Familiar", a series of eight new oil paintings that submerge us in the deep, dark forests and ruined kingdoms signature to the artist’s work. Discussing the title of this series, Mashburn writes, “My thinking is twofold: familiar in terms of being well-known due to long association, and familiar in the manner of a spirit animal or personal totem—like a witch’s familiar could be a black cat.”
His choice hints at the allegorical nature of Mashburn’s work. The landscapes in this series do feel familiar, and yet they are forgotten, like hazy memories that have been washed (or torn) away. Within those landscapes, animals are portraited as fierce and formidable, yet they stand completely alone, as if left to carry the weight of a world they once called their own.
Brian Mashburn is an American artist based in the mountains of North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a BFA in 2002. This is Mashburn’s fourth exclusive collection with Arch Enemy Arts.
