SEAN PATRICK HANNAWAY

blue stuff & pink somethings

solo exhibition

Opening May 5th, 2023

Arch Enemy Arts presents BLUE STUFF & PINK SOMETHINGS, Sean Patrick Hannaway’s debut solo show, featuring five meticulously mischievous mixed media paintings collaged on birch panels in reclaimed and painted syroco frames.

Known for his embrace of eclectic extremes, Hannaway combines High Renaissance subjects with lowbrow aesthetics to create jarring juxtapositions of high-low, sacred-profane, art-junk. His clean hand, working layer upon layer, builds an impeccably collaged painting surface that invades the serenity of religious iconography with raucous color, graffiti, and salacious bits of everyday life.

While highbrow institutions all over the world commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Picasso’s death this year, Hannaway fittingly carries us through a less reverent approach. The show’s title and cohesive color themes loosely reference Picasso’s Blue and Rose Periods, but Hannaway chose “Stuff” and “Somethings” as title words because “they are dumb, cheap, and have absolutely no business being in the title of an art collection.”

We invite you to take a closer look. You’ve got to zoom-in to get all of the hilarious hijinks, hideous headlines and haughty harlequinades Hannaway offers in this reproachful commentary of a series.
