S.V. WILLIAMS

BENEATH THE BLACK MOON

feature

June 16th, 2023

Arch Enemy Arts presents BENEATH THE BLACK MOON, a series of six new paintings by Sacramento surrealist S.V. Williams. Known for his unique hybrid creature artworks, here, Williams takes viewers through a muted kaleidoscope of new life’s creation:

“My intention was to create a place where individual beings and environments are isolated and yet somehow connected. The warmer, vibrant colors have been stripped away, leaving behind a cooling, elemental landscape that evokes the very beginnings of life on a planet. Here, organic molecules combine and recombine, forming the building blocks of creatures and environments that are at once strange and familiar.”     - S.V. Williams

As if peering through a microscope plunged into darkness, each piece is intimately scaled–measuring no more than fourteen inches in height. Yet, the elemental scenes Williams creates feel vast and expansive, carefully wrought to carry the feeling of boundlessness held within nanoscopic dimensions. Extraterrestrial elephants and protoplasmic octopi parade across sea and sky, presenting a vivid mismatch of strange, microscopic creatures, an unlikely universe captured with astonishing clarity.

Primarily self-taught, Williams is inspired by sci-fi, horror films, and the street art scenes of the West Coast where he’s painted a number of prominent murals. Exhibiting with Arch Enemy Arts since 2021, BENEATH THE BLACK MOON marks Williams’ first solo feature with the gallery.
