KRISTEN EGAN

ALL THINGS IT DEVOURS

feature

January 21st, 2022

Arch Enemy Arts is thrilled to present All Things It Devours, a solo feature exhibiting the works of Kristen Egan. Debuting 14 new original pieces from Kritsten’s celestial imagination, each is a seamless assemblage of gourd, paperclay, and acrylics with additions of wood, leather, antlers, and brass bells.

A Pennsylvania-based artist, Kristen works between her studios in Reading and Northern Berks County, near the Appalachian Trail. Exploring what she calls “contemporary folk art,” her works read like an enchantment, recalling mythos and fauna from around the world. The executions are as serious and stunning as they are whimsical and warm, each of her creatures are expressive, dazzling, and beaming with a unique personality.

Of the show's title, Kristen took inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the line itself is a segment of a riddle that Gollum asks Bilbo. She states:

“The answer to the riddle is Time, but I chose it as a title because it works on a number of levels. Another answer being Life, which builds off the themes of some of my past work - life devouring life, or energy, to sustain itself. Like the ouroboros devouring itself, it makes me think about the fascinating, endless shift of matter from one form to another.”
