THE AGE OF DESCENT
Opening September 3rd, 2021
Arch Enemy Arts is proud to debut THE AGE OF DESCENT, the first exclusive collection of work from Portland based sculpture artist Danielle Schlunegger.
Previously an installation and interactive exhibition designer for a children's museum that shuttered its doors during Covid, this new series was Danielle's first body of work that was created with uninterrupted full-time focus that allowed her to hone her resin craft and fully showcase her mastered sculptural abilities. The Age of Descent focuses on eight sculptured animal lover's eye pieces, and five free-standing bell jar sculptures, each an exploration and visual representation of emotions Danielle personally experienced the past two years while observing the deep connections between the gradual natural world collapse and humanity's emotional reaction to it.
Danielle's play on the book title "The Descent of Man" is both a nod to naturalist Charles Darwin and his evolutionary theory, while also using it as a reference for the extinction event we are currently faced with. Danielle employs the word 'descent' to point to the huge loss of animal and human lives as a direct result of human-led climate change, as well as to describe our path into the unknown future.
"Auspicious Origins of a Lifecycle of Dread" is a sculpture that showcases the lifecycle of an oarfish; an incredible and mysterious deep sea fish that are thought to be the messengers or harbingers of doom and earthquakes (though not scientifically proven). This particular fish, usually only seen near the surface when it's sick or near the end of its life, represents the idea that society is only now barely coming to terms with the idea of accelerated climate change as a result of being face to face with natural disasters occurring more frequently and more severe. With a quote that seemingly ties the meaning behind every piece in this series together, Danielle adds, "I am intrigued by the idea of seeing something only because something is wrong or it is already too late by the time you notice it."
THE AGE OF DESCENT will be physically on view from September 3rd - 25th, 2021.
Sold works will begin to ship the week of October 4th unless other rush shipping arrangements have been made.
